50 firefighters battle blaze at New Orleans hotel due for demolition this month.
New Orleans firefighters battled a tough fire atop a condemned former hotel that was already being prepared for demolition.
The former Grand Palace Hotel is located at the corner of Canal Street and Claiborne Avenue.
Fire officials told WDSU about 50 firefighters were working to put out the flames. The fire began about 8:15 p.m. and grew more intense before crews could reach it.
Crews fought the fire from outside the structure because of safety concerns. In advance of a planned demolition, walls, floors and ceilings had already been stripped away.
