Armac maintains bridge reputation…

Overnight possession sees removal of another M1 motorway bridge.

At the very beginning of the year, Armac Group earned plaudits for its demolition of the Catthorpe Interchange against the clock. Seven months later almost to the day, the company has underlined its bridge demolition credentials, demolishing another key bridge over the M1 motorway near Junction 12 in Bedfordshire.

The 1400-tonne reinforced concrete bridge, which carried the old A5120 over the M1 and had not been used since a new bridge opened in May, needed to be demolished to make way for new slip roads at Junction 12, as part of the M1 J10 to J13 managed motorway scheme.

Armac worked solidly for 15 and a half hours from 8pm on Saturday to demolish a bridge across the M1 near Junction 12 in Bedfordshire and then to re-open the motorway. The Highways Agency was able to reopen the M1 northbound ahead of schedule at 11h30, with the southbound re-opening soon after.

“The demolition of the old bridge was an essential part of the managed motorway scheme, and the closures meant that workers were able to concentrate on doing a fantastic job in demolishing the structure as quickly and as safely as possible,” said Highways Agency project manager, Lynne Stinson.
