‘Come hell or high water,’ old Ormond hospital to meet explosive end.
The old Ormond Memorial Hospital’s seven-story tower will be demolished in a matter of seconds at 7:30 a.m. July 22, said Rich Lorenz, president and CEO of Orlando-based Central Environmental Services Inc.
“Come hell or high water, it’s coming down,” said Lorenz, whose company is overseeing the demolition. “We are committed.”
Crews are gutting the building now, and asbestos has been removed, Lorenz said.
Plans call for a VIP viewing section for hospital dignitaries and local officials. When the moment comes, two buttons will be pressed, and explosive charges in the structure’s support columns will detonate.
If all goes according to plan, the building will fall in its footprint, and the dust cloud will dissipate in 10 minutes or less.
From there, it will take another 90 days to haul away the rubble. Most of the debris is being recycled. When the job is done, nothing but a field will remain, Lorenz said.
