Taking down the Danville Downtower…

Works make way for larger equipment as Motor Lodge demolition picks up speed.

Demolition of the former Downtowner Motor Lodge is continuing and a huge hole has replaced the parking deck.

Sammy Moore, a superintendent with D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co. Inc., said it will take about three weeks to complete this phase because all rubble needs to be cleared and the area backfilled so equipment can get closer to the main part of the building.

Moore said a larger excavator than has been used so far — one that reaches 130 feet into the air — will be brought in to take down the nine-story building, but it needs a level surface to work from.

“We’ll clean out all the debris, get all the concrete out, and backfill the basement,” Moore said.

It will only take about a week to pull down the building, Moore said, but the company will be on site until all the clean-up is done.

“When we’re done, it will just be level dirt left behind,” Moore said.
