Rumour mill in overdrive as stack dismantling grinds to a halt.
One of two iconic smokestacks adjacent to the former NewPage paper mill continues to grace the Kimberly village skyline more than a month after demolition began on the two brick towers.
The lengthy demolition process has stirred up rumors among residents about why the second tower still stands almost three weeks after the first stack was dismantled. One rumor suggests exotic birds inhabit the top of the second stack, but Jeff McGlin of AIM Demolition USA says such stories are untrue.
Montreal-based scrap metal specialist American Iron & Metal Co., owner of the mill site, is taking down the village’s iconic smokestacks as part of its ongoing efforts to redevelop the site. The two towers that appear on the village’s logo have stood side-by-side since the 1920s.
McGlin said workers are completing additional demolition on buildings surrounding the second smokestack to create a bigger workspace for the crane to operate in. Demolition work on the remaining tower was previously scheduled for the week of April 9
“We don’t have a start date set for the second (stack),” McGlin said.
