Implosion date still in limbo as crew awaits owl departures.
There is still no date for the implosion of the boiler structures at the Mohave Generating Station.
The April 20 date was scratched when a nest containing two Great Horned Owl eggs was discovered. The birds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The eggs hatched April 15 and 16.
“We have a proposed relocation plan which we’ve submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and we are awaiting response from them,” said Paul Klein, Southern California Edison spokesman. Southern California Edison is the plant operator and is overseeing the demolition of the 1,580-megawatt coal-fired facility, which closed at the end of 2005.
Klein said SCE may hear by the end of the week if the plan has been accepted. If they are not able to move the chicks, they’ll need to wait until the youngsters leave the nest, estimated to be late this month.
