Contractor hopes to have Murray Iron Works razed within five months.
The first exterior wall came crashing down at the old Murray Iron Works complex Thursday as the demolition process officially began.
Glynn’s Demolition and Excavating of Spring Valley, Ill., is completing a $120,000 lead abatement and likely will begin tearing down more walls Monday, when bulldozers, steel shear machines and three link-belt excavators are expected to arrive on-site.
In the meantime, a team of five workers went through some of the buildings Friday, knocking down interior walls and salvaging steel pipe. Workers in the main building removed three of seven overhead-cranes from steel beams in the ceiling and dismantled them on the concrete floor with gas-powered torches.
Terry Glynn of Glynn’s Demolition said it likely will take up to five months to demolish the 17-building complex.
