Crew unearth unexploded ordnance at school site.
Demolition workers at Westwood School in Broadstairs, Kent discovered about 40 explosives, including rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, on Wednesday.
Police were called to the former royal artillery site in Margate Road at 3.40pm, after Richard Lucas, Goody Demolition site supervisor, discovered “what looked like bombs” underneath a concrete slab.
He said: “We knew the site was an old TA base, and we are trained to deal with these situations, but it was still unexpected.”
Workers evacuated the site and police secured the area, as some of the explosives were still live.
The mortars and bullets found were thought to be part of an underground munitions chamber. Bomb disposal experts from the Explosives Ordnance Department (EOD) arrived at the scene just before 6pm, and spent two hours disposing of the explosives.
