Safety violations land Stamford contractor with $100,000 penalties.
Stamford-based demolition firm Konko LLC has been fined nearly $100,000 for safety violations during renovations to the Stamford Plaza Hotel, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced.
Nine of the violations were serious enough that death or serious harm could have resulted, a press release from the agency’s Bridgeport office said. The violations involved unsafe scaffolding, the agency said.
An investigation started Sept. 27, 2011, after a complaint was made about unsafe working conditions, an OSHA press release said. An inspection found that the scaffold being used was not restrained from tipping, was not fully planked on all work levels and was not under the supervision of a competent person who could identify hazards, the release said. Workers on the scaffold were exposed to falls from as high as 57 feet, the release said.
