Although it remains a widely used demolition method, there is something vaguely disconcerting about pulling down a structure using an excavator, sending hundreds of tonnes of steel and concrete directly towards man and machine.
This new video of a water tower being demolished in Tewkesbury in the UK is a case in point. Sure, the excavator is a long way back; and yes, the cable is plenty long and strong enough to do the work. But watch what happens when the tower’s upper-structure hits the ground:
