Investigation underway following Melbourne scaffold collapse that threw debris onto busy street
WorkSafe is investigating a scaffolding collapse in Glen Waverley, Melbourne this morning. The incident happened about 9.30am local time at the Ikon development site at the corner of Kingsway and Coleman Parade.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said part of a wall fell and hit a hoarding which was joined to the scaffolding at the edge of the demolition site. The scaffolding fell across one lane of Coleman Parade.
“Nobody was hurt on this occasion, however the potential risks were there,” Birt said. “We have a team of investigators at the site looking into the cause. This is in a very busy area around a train station and at that time of the morning there are cars and pedestrians around this area, so the risks were extreme. This could have had quite a different outcome.”
Birt said WorkSafe had investigated a large number of scaffolding collapses across building sites in Melbourne over the past three years.
The 10-storey Ikon development is in the early stages with shops being pulled down, before construction begins on the $70 million commercial and residential building.
