Turnover vanity and profit sanity…

Financial results of UK demolition’s Top Ten makes for fascinating and revealing reading

Last week, the UK construction industry welcomed a new magazine: The Construction Index. Notwithstanding the input from here at Demolition News Towers, the new magazine is an exciting new development for the UK’s largest online industry news portal.

But perhaps the most fascinating read of all was the analysis of the financial health of the UK demolition industry’s Top Ten contractors (by turnover).

It comes as no great surprise to see Keltbray and McGee claiming first and second positions respectively, and nor does the fact that fast-growing Erith Group seized third spot.

What is interesting is what lies beneath the surface of these figures. For while Keltbray was first in terms of turnover, it was ninth based upon profit. Similarly, McGee’s lofty second place in the turnover league was balanced by a 10th place in the profit standings.

Top of the profitability heap is EDS which currently boasts an impressive 10.5 percent margin, with DSM in second place with a whopping 21.6 percent margin that is streets ahead of its competition.

Equally notable is the growth – in the midst of an ongoing recession – enjoyed by both Coleman and Company and Brown and Mason.
