Mayor wants Christchurch cathedral demolition report made public
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker has backed calls for all information on the city’s cathedral rebuild to be made public, calling Anglican Bishop Victoria Matthews “the guardian of a building which belongs to all of us”.
Rev Matthews has come under fire for not releasing the engineering report behind the church’s controversial decision not to rebuild the 131-year-old Christ Church Cathedral.
The church said last Friday that the cathedral, which was severely damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes, would have to be demolished to within 2-3m. Rebuilding or strengthening were ruled out, but building experts have said the cathedral could still be saved in its present form.
The news has been met with dismay in the city. A petition to save the building has been launched and a Christchurch city councillor has said he would not be surprised if legal action was launched to prevent the demolition.
