Crews in race against time to clear highway after implosion drops bridge onto carriageway.
Crews demolished the northbound Quivira bridge over I-435 in Kansas on Saturday. I-435 remained closed while crews cleaned up. Construction on the bridge is an effort to replace the bridge, but traffic will be reduced to two lanes until the project is complete later this year.
Construction crews said they understand the frustration, but they are trying to minimize delays by doing the demolition all at once instead of in pieces. They said there is a reason behind the roadwork.
“Quivira Road will accommodate more lanes of traffic the city has a project to the north to add additional lanes,” said construction manager Bob Fry.
