Mini excavator carries out demolition while suspended from crane; health and safety types should look away now.
We know from experience that whilst demolition is a universal language that is understood by its professionals regardless of their race, creed or colour, the industry is not without its slightly quirky interpretations of what is considered acceptable from a health and safety standpoint.
But having seen the following video, we are forced to ponder just how this unusual working method was broached with the mini excavator operator. We reckon it went something like this:
Site Manager – OK, so today we’re taking down that tall, brick-built structure over there.
Operator – OK
Site Manager – So we’re going to bring in a crane that will lift the machine.
Operator – Top-down? Yes, I suppose that makes sense.
Site Manager – This isn’t exactly top-down. You’re going to be in the machine.
Operator – Of course I’m going to be in the machine. I am a machine operator. I have a card to prove it.
Site Manager – No, you don’t understand. You’re going to be in the machine when the crane lifts it.
Operator – Ha. You don’t fool me that easily.
Site Manager – No seriously. We’ve run the sums and we reckon the cheapest and most effective way to take down that structure is to haul you and your machine into the air.
Operator – But what about site safety?
Site Manager – Well, we’ve taken that into consideration and we figure that, since you’ll be 20 metres above the ground, you won’t actually be on the site so no problem.
Operator – You have clearly thought this through. But can I make one small observation? How do I go to the bathroom?
Site Manager – Oh that’s where we’ve really thought outside the box. There’s another crane due here in about 10 minutes that will lift a Portaloo up to the same height. All you’ve got to do is jump across from your machine.
Operator – Jump?
Site Manager – Or swing; you’re the expert here. But just think, your own personal Portaloo just a few feet away. Some operators would give their right arm for such convenience.
Enjoy:
