Man killed was awaiting the birth of new baby.
A 34-year old demolition worker who died after being crushed by a scoop bucket at a south-west Sydney demolition site yesterday had been waiting for his wife to give birth today or tomorrow, his union says.
He was standing near a tip truck being loaded by a 20-tonne single-arm excavator just before 3pm when the bucket came off.
It struck the truck and fell on top of him, causing fatal head and chest injuries, Inspector George Psaroudis of Campbelltown Local Area Command said.
This latest accident is likely to reignite the debate about excavator quick hitches that saw semi automatic models effectively outlawed in Europe more than a year ago.
