Work starts on demolition of long-disputed water tower.
The first winter snow of 2012 descended upon Epsom – home town of Demolition News Towers – this past weekend, providing a perfect excuse for some wintry dog-walking.
But no sooner has we turned the corner at the dog’s favourite lamp-post than we encountered sure signs that the long awaited demolition of the nearby Horton Water Tower had finally got underway and that Erith Group had bagged the contract.
While this contract will barely cause a ripple in the context of the global demolition industry, it will be welcomed by local residents for whom the tower has been an irritating eyesore in the midst of a new housing development.
The Horton Water Tower has long overshadowed residents at the Livingstone housing development in Epsom with repeated attempts to demolish the building scuppered by red tape and delays. However scaffolding has once again been erected around the tower and this time developers have promised it will be demolished. The tower, which is owned by London and Quadrant Housing Association (L&Q), was due to be demolished last year only to be halted by a change in planning law. But permission was finally granted by Epsom and Ewell Council in August last year.
On the basis that it’s (a) local, (b) at the centre of a dispute and (c) another excuse for dog-walking, we’ve just swung by the site to capture this snow-bound photo.
