Worker injured on Grand Chancellor contract…

Man rushed to hospital following incident at New Zealand’s largest demolition contract.

A Fletcher Construction worker has been seriously injured while working on the demolition of the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch.

The man, who is aged in his 40s, was injured on the top floor of the Chancellor on Cashel Street, within the red zone, this morning. He been taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance, where his family are now with him.

“Our thoughts are with the worker and his family. Right now our focus is on ensuring that they have all the support they need,” Fletcher’s CEO Construction Graham Darlow said in a statement.

“We are really distressed that one of our people has been harmed and feel deeply for the family.”

CERA general manager of operations, Warwick Isaacs, said they had developed a robust safety plan for the demolition of the Chancellor and “it is distressing and concerning that an incident resulting in serious harm has occurred.”
