Peterborough looks to get Posh…

Cawarden kick-starts regeneration of Peterborough football ground area.

Ambitious plans to transform a key area of Peterborough have taken a step forward with the demolition of a row of shops to open the way to a prestigious development.

The much-anticipated demolition of the dilapidated shops and former Club Metro near Peterborough United’s football ground, in London Road, has just started and will continue throughout January.

The two-storey arcade of shops was also the former site of the Party Superstore, a Gala Bingo hall and a bowling alley. The shops were bought by Peterborough City Council when it purchased the Posh stadium for £8 million in January 2010.

In their place will be a temporary car park for the stadium, but the land could be sold off for new shops to replace the old neglected ones.

In the long term, the site will provide the gateway towards the £150 million South Bank Project – which includes the multi-million pound Fletton Quays development and Carbon Challenge Project to deliver a 295-homes eco-village.
