Stand-up tower at former Rieter plant quietly leveled
The sole towering structure left standing at Rieter Automotive came down Thursday with a whimper.
“It took just three and a half hours, and it was down,” said Jimmy Harper, project manager for WEL Companies Inc, the company bought the former Rieter property.
Cox, Lowell director of economic development, said the problem of demolishing the structure that remained after a summer fire gutted the property was, in the end, settled quietly.
“There were no explosives used. It was pulled down with heavy equipment,” Cox said.
Many residents had expressed safety concerns as did town officials after a Dec. 14 attempt to raze the structure went awry and sent shrapnel flying half a mile away. The metal hit Lynn Scheering’s downtown building as well as her vehicle. She was adamant that explosives not be used again.
