Lowell readies for second blast…

Implosion Take Two scheduled for tomorrow.

A second attempt to bring down the Rieter Automotive tank structure left standing after a failed detonation Dec. 14 was approved yesterday.

Jimmy Harper, project manager for Wisconsin-based WEL Companies Inc., said he hopes to set up for the demolition Thursday and bring it down Friday. He apologized repeatedly for the earlier failed detonation, which sent shrapnel about half a mile away. “I’m so grateful no one was hurt,” he said.

The Town Council’s unanimous nod came after a series of meetings between councilmen, staff, the police chief, fire chief and Harper. Safety was the top priority.

As approved by the council, Harper’s plan calls for using C-4 explosives to cut through the steel supports before manual demolition. He said it is the safest method for his workers and the town.

Harper said he was unable to find licensed professionals for this type of project in Indiana. He found one in Oklahoma and another in Chicago. The company used Dec. 14 will not be used again, he said.
