Costello bags Manchester Parkade contract; no-one surprised.
Town officials on Tuesday picked the low bidder among 18 companies seeking the contract to demolish vacant buildings in the Manchester Parkade.
Costello Dismantling Co. of Middleboro, Mass., bid $566,150, Public Works Director Mark Carlino said. With the $590,000 the town already has spent for asbestos removal, total demolition costs stand at about $1.15 million, well under initial estimates of $2 million to $2.3 million.
Costello was among three of the companies vying for the contract that submitted bids under $600,000, Carlino has said. Once the contract is signed, the company’s first step will be seeking approval from the federal Environmental Protection Agency for a plan to remove polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. The former Stop & Shop supermarket contains no PCBs, Carlino said, but they are present in several other buildings in the blighted shopping complex.
