Two employees in East St. Louis demolition programme put on leave after audit finds irregularities

An audit of the city’s demolition program revealed some questionable activity and has led to the director and his secretary being placed on unpaid administrative leave.Marcus Johnson, chief of the demolition program, and Sheila Thomas, a secretary, were placed on administrative leave Monday.

Their offices in the Tax Increment Finance Department, were locked and the locks were change immediately, according to City Manager Deletra Hudson. Auxiliary police officers were posted outside the door leading to the offices, and yellow police crime scene tape was placed on the doorways.The accounting firm of Brown, Smith and Wallace from St. Louis conducted the audit.

The results have been turned over to the St. Clair County state’s attorney’s office, Hudson said.
