Four day Festive possession will remove and replace Cow Lane bridge.
A team of 120 workers will gain possession of the freight railway lines near Reading at 5pm on Christmas Eve when the tracks will have to be removed, followed by the demolition of the existing bridge.
On December 26 a Self Propelled Modular Transporter will carry the new bridge, which is a third heavier than the Caversham Road deck installed in the New Year, to slot into the prepared space.
The railway line has to be handed back by 10pm on Wednesday, December 28.
The Network Rail scheme is the first phase in a project which will transform one of the town’s worst bottlenecks. Project manager Matt Jackson said: “This is one of the key milestones in the Reading railways upgrade. The key reason for installing this bridge is to provide Reading with a proper carriageway with two lanes for vehicles, a cycle lane and pedestrian walkways. It will also allow access for double decker buses so it will make a massive difference to the traffic system.”
