Debris mountain angers NZ residents…

Local people up in arms over illegal earthquake rubble dumping ground.

An illegal earthquake rubble dump in Sydenham is turning the area into “the Mt Cook of demolition material”, angering local businesses and residents.

Dust and noise from the dump site, located near the Durham St overbridge, have been causing problems since rubble started piling up this week.

The Chain Man owner Tony Tamakehu, whose business is close to the site, said the “eyesore” was affecting a number of companies in the area.

“The council’s trying to promote Sydenham at the moment, but it’s really not pretty.”

Tamakehu believed about 750 tonnes of material had been dumped at the site since Monday, and it was likely to get worse as time went on.

“Why let them do that when there are empty blocks in the city where you could set up a dump?”

Spreydon-Heathcote councillor Barry Corbett said he was “absolutely horrified” by the location of the dump.

“It’s a horrendous situation, just unbelievable … when I drove over it [the overbridge] the other day, it [the pile] looked like the Mt Cook of demolition material.”
