SIAC dismantles Sarsfield Bridge in overnight possession.
Built in 1994, the Sarsfield bridge, one of the longest of its type in Europe, was made up of seven separate post-tensioned spans. Bandon footbridge, constructed around the same time, also had a post-tensioned main span. Running under or adjacent to both bridges were a plethora of utilities such as the major city and harbour water main, fibre optic cables and culverts.
The two bridges – which spanned the N25 on the south side of Cork – were demolished on the October Bank Holiday weekend 2011. Up to 70,000 vehicles per day used to pass under them meaning that a full road closure and major traffic diversion was put in place for the duration of the demolition. The demolition was required as part of the construction of two new flyovers over the Sarsfield and Bandon Roundabouts
SIAC safely and successfully completed the demolition without affecting any of the utilities and opened the road ahead of schedule.
