New Hampshire to Maine beidge to be replaced; demolition to begin in January.
After years of studies and band-aid repairs, the Memorial Bridge spanning the Piscataqua River between Maine and New Hampshire is set to be replaced.
The 88 year old bridge has been closed to vehicle traffic since this summer after numerous portions of the bridge were inspected and found to be rusted beyond repair.
Archer Western Contractors has been awarded the roughly $82 million job of tearing down the old structure and replacing it with a similar styled center lift span bridge, which will allow maritime traffic to pass under it.
Transportation officials from Maine and New Hampshire met with community and business leaders to present their plan and answer questions. They say once the contract is signed in December, work will begin.
