Near miss as giant W falls from building…

Contractor: “…We’re really lucky it didn’t fall on someone’s head. It’s unsafe around here.”

Under normal circumstances, anything falling onto power lines would be seen as a bad sign. But in this instance, those same lines potentially prevented a far more serious accident.

About 10 a.m. Tuesday, a large “W” fell from the top north side of the Westinghouse building because of demolition vibrations. Thick telephone and power lines broke its fall.

Contractor Ryan Hahn watched the 1,000-pound cement letter take the tumble.

“I’ve actually had a lot of people walk up and ask for the ‘W,'” he said. “But I’m probably either going to give it to the city or the historical society. We’re really lucky it didn’t fall on someone’s head. It’s unsafe around here.”

“I was videotaping at the time and actually caught the fall on tape,” Hahn said. “Kind of cool — the power lines saved it.”
