Hotel demolition cost estimated at 300 million Euros…

Hotel at centre of Greenpeace conservation row to come down; but at a hefty cost.

It’s true that the embattled Euro does not carry quite the same weight as it did prior to the economic implosion of Greece and Italy. But 300 million Euros is still a chunk of change for the demolition of an unfinished and illegal hotel.

But that is the estimated price tag set against the demolition of the 411-bedroom El Algarrobico hotel that was built illegally within the confines of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

Environment minister Rosa Aguilar and Andalucia Junta president Jose Antonio Grinan agreed that central government will take charge of the demolition, while the Junta will organise the removal of the debris.

However, it is still not set in stone whether the original licence granted by Carboneras town hall was illegal.
A judge said that destroying the hotel without official confirmation of this would cause “irreparable and irreversible damage” to developer Azata, which claims it had been given the go-ahead to build the hotel and was not aware of any legal issues.

Demolition will begin as soon as a ‘firm judicial decision’ has been made to revoke the licence.
