Mohave Boiler implosion pushed back two months
The two boiler structures at the Mohave Generating Station will get a two-month reprieve. Plans called for imploding them later this month but the target dates have been pushed back to 27 January.
The turbine deck implosion will occur on 3 February said Paul Phelan, manager of engineering and technical services for Southern California Edison’s (SCE) power production department, and decommissioning project manager. SCE was majority owner and operator of the plant, which supplied electricity to more than one million customers. The 1,580 megawatt coal-fired facility closed on New Year’s Eve 2005. Demolition began in late 2009.
“The reason for this delay is to perform some additional structural preparation at the rear of the boiler structures, specifically to remove heat exchangers — called air preheaters — and some ducting before the structures can be felled with explosives,” Phelan said. The structures will be imploded simultaneously and will fall toward the east.
