Contractors eschewed the crowds of onlookers and ranks of TV cameras as they “quietly” dropped the last remnants of BHP Billiton’s Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant, site of Australia’s largest corporate disaster.
It was a landmark carrying the stigma of having claimed the life of BHP employee James Wadley. Wadley was killed and several workers were badly injured in an explosion at Boodarie in 2004. The plant has been out of operation since.
