15 years after falling into disuse, Richborough cooling towers may finally be coming down.
Plans to demolish the three cooling towers and chimney at Richborough have been submitted to Thanet council. The latest application asks for approval to demolish the 97 metre-high cooling towers and the 127 metre-high chimney.
The chimneys have not been used since 1996 and the applicant states that they are now surplus to the requirements of the site and cannot be retained in any future scheme, because of their location, size and speciality of use.
The application is accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment, which looks at the impact of the demolition on the environment.
