Peoria airport all set for demolition…

Former airport serving Caterpillar’s home city set to fall

Dismantling and demolition of Peoria’s former airport terminal building is expected to get under way next month.

The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria this week approved a nearly $3 million bid by Peoria Metro Construction for the work, which will eliminate much of the lobby, ticketing and boarding gate areas but leave behind the tower.

The demolition bid does not include engineering costs, contingency fees, air monitoring, contract administration and roadway improvements but is about $1 million lower based on previous estimates. Costs of the project are being paid for using local funds.

Only two construction firms entered bids for the work, but it seems likely that there will be a Caterpillar presence on a demolition project in its own backyard.
