City begins preparation for 2012 Super Bowl.
Indianapolis is set to start demolishing houses in its historic urban core before the city plays host to next year’s Super Bowl. Part of Mayor Ballard’s ReBuild Indy plan, the leveling of 2,000 buildings, mostly houses and mostly in the denser urban area of Center Township is already afoot.
Bids have already been accepted for the demolition of the first 300 buildings listed in the Abandoned Housing Initiative as “unsafe structures.” Demolition starts now!
While many neighbors applaud the plan to rid their neighborhoods of troubling abandoned homes, preservationists and other neighborhood activists say that the demolition of these houses, most of which don’t belong to the city, will result in another problem, empty unkempt lots.
