Contractor in no hurry to clean up Baltimore rubble

For most demolition contractors, an appearance in the local press for having left a mess on site would be cause enough to set the men and machines in motion before resident disquiet and media grumbling escalated into a city prohibition.

But, apparently, if you’re widely known as the city’s favourite demolition contractors, it is acceptable to take a somewhat more relaxed view, as evidenced by Pless Jones’ less than hurried response to resident complaints in Durham Street.

About 45 days have past since P&J knocked down 11 city-owned vacant rowhouses on the 1600 block of N. Durham Street. But instead of taking away the debris and grading the lot, piles of rubble remain, including a large open hole that residents call dangerous.

“The contractor is planning to resume work this week, weather permitting,” Housing spokesperson Tania Baker said in an e-mail. “Site clearing and grading take approximately four weeks, depending on completion of the wall work and weather conditions.”
