UK contractor categorically denies presence of asbestos on former social club site.
The director of a contractor behind the demolition of a former Burton social club has allayed concerns that deadly asbestos was left on the site.
East Staffordshire Borough Council launched an investigation after a complaint that rubble left at the bulldozed Belvedere Park Club, in Belvedere Road, may have been contaminated with the dust. It also warned people to stay away from the site, which is private property.
But today William Crooks, director of Derby-based building firm Cawarden, which carried out the demolition work, said there was ‘no asbestos whatsoever’ in the debris. “The site had to undergo a full pre-demolition asbestos survey before the work could be carried out. This is a legal requirement. Asbestos was found in the Belvedere building so we had to hire specialist licensed asbestos removal contractors. The contractors have to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to give them 14 days’ notice, which is part of the legal requirement. After the 14-day period contractors went in and removed the asbestos with the required licence. Before this happened another firm, which is accredited, visited the site to give an independent review where the asbestos was and passed it off.
All the asbestos was removed before the building was pulled down and we had a clearance certificate which was forwarded to the site’s owners and the HSE.”
“I can categorically say there is no asbestos whatsoever in the rubble left behind. These materials will be recycled and used for another building project.”
