Man injured during bridge demolition…

Texas bridge collapses while being demolished, injuring excavator operator.

A bridge being removed on Loop 256 in Anderson County, Texas collapsed unexpectedly Wednesday morning, injuring a construction worker moments after he began the process to demolish the structure.

Police Chief Jeff Powell said the accident happened about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when a construction worker, identified as Jose Luis Alva, drove a piece of machinery onto the bridge and began jack hammering the concrete.

“Within seconds, the bridge collapsed, and Alva and the machinery fell with the collapsed bridge,” he said.

Fire Marshal Alan Wilcher said the bridge was not in use and no traffic was diverted because of the accident. He said Alva was transported to Tyler by helicopter with non life-threatening injuries.

Wilcher said the investigation is ongoing as the Texas Department of Transportation is looking into the accident.
