Federal judge orders 10-day delay amidst preservation protest.
A federal judge has denied a historic preservation group’s request to prevent the demolition of the former home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he ordered the government agency that owns the Civic Arena to wait 10 days while the group appeals to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
U.S. District Judge David Cercone on Friday denied Preservation Pittsburgh’s request for a court order saying he has no legal jurisdiction. But on Monday, Cercone told the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority the group deserves a chance to appeal.
Preservation Pittsburgh wants to save the 50-year-old building with the retractable, igloo-shaped dome because of its architectural history and see it used for another purpose.
