UK contractor fights to salvage impressive stone porch.
The demolition industry is all-too-often portrayed as a sector hell-bent on destruction and with little respect for architecture and heritage.
Which is why we were intrigued when we heard that leading UK contractor Armac Group was seeking a new home for an impressive stone porch that currently adorns the front of the Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
According to reports, the 5 x 4 x 4 metre porch was built in 1899 and had been sold to an American collector. Sadly, that deal subsequently fell through and this impressive structure is now faced with demolition, something that Armac is keen to avoid.
Armac Group’s Adrian Mclean believes the porch would make an ideal folly in a large garden while others have suggested that it is converted into a hot tub, a barbecue or even a bar.
“Whatever it sells for, we intend to donate 50% to the hospital trust,” Mclean says.
