Another NZ hotel checks out…

Owners announce impending demolition of yet another Christchurch hotel.

The owners of the Crowne Plaza Hotel yesterday confirmed the building, badly damaged in the February 22 earthquake, would come down, leaving uncertain futures for its 160 staff.

IHG, which owns the hotel, said the Crowne Plaza would not be rebuilt, mainly due to rising construction costs resulting from changes to the Christchurch building codes.

However, the company said it remained committed to maintaining a presence in Christchurch.

The hotel, designed by Warren and Mahoney, joins the Hotel Grand Chancellor and the Copthorne Hotel on the demolition list. The future of other Christchurch hotels remains unknown.

All three hotels under IHG management in Christchurch – the Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn City Centre and Holiday Inn on Avon – sustained significant damage during the February 22 earthquake.
