Yet another landmark building set to join Christchurch ost-quake demolition list.
The future of Christchurch Convention Centre hangs in the balance following the earthquake in February this year.
Engineers for the Christchurch City Council believe the centre has suffered so much damage that it should be demolished. The outcome for the building has not yet been settled with insurers but discussions are progressing and a final agreement expected soon.
A report in the New Zealand Herald featured Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism Chief Executive Tim Hunter, who said the convention centre was “important to Christchurch, and the city had done well out of it financially.
“Tourism driven by conferences and conventions was worth between NZ$80m (US$66m) and $100m (US$82m) a year to Christchurch, with the conference visitor spending about three times as much cash as the general leisure traveller. Losing the centre would be a serious blow. The next question would be what replaces it,” Hunter said.
The venue’s management company, Vbase, has since announced it is to downsize and transfer governance and management control to the council.
