Opposition to Wenceslas demolition gains momentum…

Officials and locals unite to defence 130 year old building from “monster”

Opposition to a proposed construction project on Wenceslas Square has taken a new step as 13 university professors have addressed a letter to Culture Minister Jiří Besser describing their reservations about a project slated for a historic preservation zone.

The letter comes in the wake of a series of public protests and a petition that has drawn 14,000 signatures, including that of former President Václav Havel, who deemed the nine-floor glass structure earmarked for the site a “monster”.

The group of 13 is led by Academy of Sciences’ art historian Rostislav Švácha, who claims the demolition of the existing building will lead to an “unjustifiable cultural offense of both Czech and European importance.”
