Demolition deadline for another NZ hotel…

Christchurch’s Copthorne Hotel to be razed within three months.

The quake-damaged Copthorne Hotel in central Christchurch will be demolished within three months after the contract was let to local company Leighs Engineering.

The contract to demolish the Durham St Copthorne Hotel has been awarded to local company Leighs Engineering, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said today.

Demolishing the 11-storey hotel would be a “big job”, but the work was expected to be completed within three months, he said.

“We want to get these badly damaged buildings down safely and as quickly as possible so more businesses can get back up and running in the central city.”

Five companies had been considered for the contract and the tender panel and building owner decided to award the contract to Leighs Engineering, who would demolish the building by conventional methods, he said.

“The building will be demolished by mechanical means using high reach excavator machines. The first stage of demolition will involve a complete inspection of the structure by the contractor’s engineering team Holmes Consulting Group.”
