Top quality video captures bridge implosion in fine detail.
A historic bridge that was closed in February 2009 because of structural problems came tumbling down on Monday morning.
For thousands of residents who relied on the 103-year-old Charleroi-Monessen Bridge for their commute, the implosion means they are one step closer to regaining a route over the Monongahela River.
“It reached a point, through deterioration and rust and so forth over many years, it was just impractical to rehabilitate it any longer,” PennDOT’s Bill Kovach said.
PennDOT approved and is funding a $2 million project that will replace most of the span of the bridge. The department hopes to have the new bridge open by November 2012.
