Dignified demolition for Boeing 2 Plant…

High recycling levels as historic aircraft plant is deconstructed.

The building that gave birth to the B-17 Bomber and Rosie Riveter, the collective name for the women who helped build the planes during World War II, is coming down piece by piece.

Boeing says nearly 86 percent of the building will be recycled. Its 96,000 tons of concrete is being crushed into fill that will never leave the site. Around 10,000 tons of steel are being sorted and recycled.

Wood recyclers Duluth Timber hope to gather a quarter of a million feet of the old growth timber boards used to construct the plant. A spokesman said they are already getting orders from people who want pieces of the prized old growth beams in their construction and remodeling projects.

When the demolition is complete in September, Boeing plans to begin restoring the Duwamish riverfront that served as its back door for 75 years.
