Billingham House moves step closer to demolition

Former ICI headquarters shuffles towards date with destiny following council vote.

Stockton Council’s planning committee voted 13 to one yesterday to demolish former ICI headquarters Billingham House. But the authority still faces a legal battle with current owners Bizzy B management to finally raze the derelict building to the ground.

As reported, Bizzy B have been seeking an injunction at London’s High Court to halt the council’s plans, and the drawn-out case is not due back at court until mid-August.

Python Properties has signed an agreement with Bizzy B to invest £5m into the building to bring it back to use, saying it could create 1,000 new jobs for the area.

Agents for the company told councillors if it did not complete the redevelopment in six months, money would be safeguarded to pay for the demolition.

Billingham House became vacant in 1995, and was bought by Bizzy B in 2000 with a view to redevelopment – but the building has been standing derelict ever since.
