Aftershocks delay Grand Chancellor works…

Post-quake aftershocks continue to hamper demolition efforts in New Zealand.

Powerful aftershocks have delayed the demolition of the Hotel Grand Chancellor, one of Christchurch’s tallest buildings.

The Government announced last month that Fletcher Construction would demolish the earthquake-crippled Hotel Grand Chancellor, taking up to a year, at a cost of more than $10 million.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) demolition manager Warwick Isaacs said yesterday the June 13 magnitude-6.3 and 5.6 aftershocks had delayed work by one to two weeks.

“The [year-long] deadline, at this stage, is not being extended, and the contractors are hoping to keep to the original timeframe.”

Isaacs said engineers were completing a full building assessment, which would confirm the propping needed to enable a safe demolition.

“Engineers have confirmed that there are more cracks in walls and floors, and that the building has moved about 60 millimetres,” he said.
