Christchurch contractors use hairy wrecking ball to raise money for young cancer patient.
The post-quake demolition process in New Zealand has been fraught with problems from the very outset. Demolition contractors have been accused of being too quick and then too slow, and of theft. The entire project has been tarnished with accusations of corruption and mismanagement.
But all of that was set aside for a publicity stunt to help raise money for a local cancer patient. Christchurch demolition companies pulled together for Alessandra Millie Clements, by running a sweep stake on how long a wig would stay on a wrecking ball.
A crowd of demolition workers stood in the rain, all eyes on an adorned wrecking ball that had been painted black with the dregs of Hurricanes halfback Piri Weepu’s facial and head hair glued to its side.
About 20 construction companies took part in the sweep, each placing a $500 punt at how long it would take the hair to slide off the ball. At seven minutes and 42 seconds the makeshift wig was torn from the wrecking ball as it demolished Securities House on the corner of Gloucester St and Madras St.
