Snowstorm funding could be diverted into demolition programme.
The City of Freeport’s demolition budget could benefit mightily from an expected influx of funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
During Monday’s City Council meeting, Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp said the city will likely use around $26,000 in reimbursements from FEMA to supplement the demolition budget for the current fiscal year. The anticipated funding, linked to the early February snowstorm, would more than double the funds set aside for demolition in Freeport.
Gaulrapp emphasized that the extra funding would help the city carry out a key initiative aimed at improving neighborhoods.
“The more homes we are able to take out of play, the better our community will be able to look,” Gaulrapp said.
