Construction worker on barge killed by concrete falling from demolished bridge deck.
A construction worker was killed Tuesday afternoon at the Henley Bridge project in Knoxville. Solin Estrada Jimenez, 50, of Chattanooga, was employed by the contractor, Britton Bridge LLC.
The area of the accident was on a barge on the Tennessee River below the bridge structure. Jimenez was standing on the barge when he was hit by a chunk of concrete that was jarred loose from a support beam as the contractor works on the bridge demolition. Officials say wJimenez was wearing his safety helmet.
Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk says four other workers who were on the barge were questioned to help determine what happened.
Jimenez’s body was taken to the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center for an autopsy.
